P SPIROMETRY VERSUS FLOW VOLUME INSPIRATORY AND EXPIRATORY LOOP To the Editor: I would like to comment on the excellent CME article, “Vocal Cord Dysfunction: An Update” by Leslie M. Gimenez, MD, and Heidi Zafra, MD (Ann Allergy Asthma Immunol. 2011;106:267–275). I compliment the authors on the very thorough review and analysis of the literature. I am concerned by the nomenclature they used in describing the physiologic analysis of intrathoracic or extrathoracic airflow limitation.1 This must be done by flow volume loop analysis and not by a volume time plot or spirometry, as is referred to in the article. At all places where the word spirometry is used, a flow volume inspiratory and expiratory loop should be substituted.

R-V graph in whole body plethysmography

Slow spirometry and forced spirometry (flow volume loop) are often used to measure clinically relevant lung volumes and forced expiratory and inspiratory flows. Dynamic parameters, such as forced expiratory volumes in one second (FEV1) or forced vital capacity (FVC) and static lung volumes, such as expiratory reserve volume (ERV), inspiratory capacity (IC) and inspiratory vital capacity (IVC) c...

Inspiratory flow-volume curve evaluation for detecting upper airway disease.

BACKGROUND The 2005 American Thoracic Society/European Respiratory Society guidelines on spirometry emphasize examination of the inspiratory curve of the flow-volume loop for evidence of intrathoracic or extrathoracic upper airway obstruction. We sought to determine how frequently evaluations are performed for abnormal inspiratory curves. METHODS We retrospectively reviewed all examinations p...

Expiratory reserve volume maneuver may be the preferred method for some patients during spirometry testing.

In the July 2012 issue of the Journal, Borg and Thompson1 reported the effect of 2 different vital capacity methods on lung volume data and patient classification derived from whole body plethysmography. The preferred method according to American Thoracic Society/European Respiratory Society recommendations is to follow closed-shutter panting with exhalation to residual volume (RV, expiratory r...

Spirometry measurements during an episode of exercise-related transient abdominal pain.

PURPOSE To determine whether changes in lung function are associated with exercise-related transient abdominal pain (ETAP). METHODS Twenty-eight subjects susceptible to ETAP performed a flow-volume loop before (pre) and after (post) treadmill exercise. Fourteen of the subjects developed symptoms of ETAP during the exercise and completed the flow-volume loop while the pain was present. The rem...

Changes in peak expiratory flow and respiratory strength during the menstrual cycle.

This study evaluated the spirometry and respiratory static pressures in 17 young women, twice a week for three successive ovulatory menstrual cycles to determine if such variables changed across the menstrual, follicular, periovulatory, early-to-mid luteal and late luteal phases. The factors phases of menstrual cycle and individual cycles had no significant effect on the spirometry variables ex...
